In fact, perfecting the chronograph is what most aficionados would argue is Breitling’s true calling as a marque. However, while the most iconic Breitling chronos have long been the aviation-focused Navitimer references – with their busy, business-minded dial layouts – the watches the brand made in the 1940s had an elegance and unique style that packaged the functionality of a chrono in pieces with a more sophisticated feel.

This ref. 777 Premier model from the ‘40s is one such example of Breitling’s beautiful pre-MCM chronos. Featuring a rose gold case that has a delicate glow to it in-the-metal that differs tremendously from the pinkish reds of modern rose gold, the watch features two registers which enable the wearer to count minutes and hours. The overall package of this 777 has a rare balance of being simultaneously luxurious and understated.

This Breitling Premier is in excellent condition. The case is unpolished and untouched and its dial is in mint condition and the watch has a light, even, and extremely desirable patina throughout. The original radium lume remains present on both its dial and hands and has aged to a lovely orange-yellow color. This is a watch from the ‘40s that wears its years proudly, but shows no signs of abuse – perfect for the vintage watch enthusiast that prefers an example that flaunts its age rather than one that’s been hidden away in a sock drawer for decades.

Breitling has always hung its hat on its chronograph offerings and each generation of those iconic watches has proudly placed the brand’s incredibly distinct visual identity on full display. Simply put, nothing else in the watch world looks quite like a Breitling chrono! Regardless of which era of the brand’s watches sparks your fancy – and they all have their charms – the watches produced in the ‘60s are considered by many to represent the golden era of Breitling.

Breitling’s 1960s offerings were always purpose-oriented and typically intended for use by aviators, had delightfully busy dials, and used bold colors and contrasting finishing techniques. However, not all Breitling chronos were designed with the needs of pilots in-mind. Pieces like this tremendously rare 1960s Co-Pilot ref. 7660 were made to time yachting regattas! For those that love the Breitling chrono aesthetic, but have a penchant for the obscure or simply prefer yachting-focused tool watches to those made for pilots and divers, these handsome chronos are an incredibly collectible find. Boasting a distinctly colorful bezel design, clearly legible and bright sub-dials, and a steel case with gorgeous details like subtly sculpted lugs and what many collectors consider perfect proportions, it’s a watch with tons of classic Breitling style, but with its own unique personality.

These watches were made to be used, but this example remains in very nice vintage condition. This watch’s dial is absolutely flawless, with vibrant colors and no issues to note or mention. While its case does show signs of having been polished lightly at some point, its sculpted lugs still show their original beveled edges beautifully. The original tritium lume remains on both the watch’s dial and handset and has aged to a lovely shade of green, which is the norm for this reference and standard for the lume Breitling’s of this period used. Over the years, the Submariner has seen numerous iterations, each bringing its own innovations and design tweaks. However, the Reference Number 5513, produced from 1962 to 1989, holds a special place in the Submariner's history. This model, often referred to as the "no-date" Submariner, was the first to feature crown guards, protecting the winding crown from damage. The 5513 was also the last Submariner to use an acrylic crystal, giving it a distinctly vintage look.
