Eddie Van Halen playing his EVH Charvel Art Series striped guitars

There are moments in rock ‘n’ roll history when an instrument is more than just an object—it becomes a conduit for emotion, for expression, and the sound of a generation. For those who know the magic of Eddie Van Halen's influence, the sound of his guitar is inseparable from the very essence of rock itself. But to possess a piece of that history? Well that’s just another day here at Walt Grace Vintage.

Recently, we were fortunate enough to acquire six Charvel EVH Art Series guitars, each of them painted by Eddie Van Halen and tied to the unforgettable moments when he graced the stage on his 2004, 2007, and 2012 Van Halen tours and gave the world a glimpse of the transcendent power of his playing. These guitars are not just instruments; they are part of a story—a story that weaves through the cities of America, the arenas where the magic happened, and the memories of fans who were lucky enough to witness the music genius in the flesh.

The Guitars: A Collection of Icons

These are six guitars that were played on stage, each with its own distinct history and moment in time in Eddie’s hands. The Charvel EVH Art Series guitars have become a thing of legend in EVH fandom, hand striped, stage played and signed by Eddie himself. These guitars have not been played since their fateful nights on stage with the virtuoso. All six guitars still even have the original strings that Eddie’s tech Tom Weber setup and Eddie played those nights.

1. Grand Rapids, MI - July 9th, 2004: The Roar of a Revolution

Let’s kick things off with the first of the six—one that Eddie took to the stage in Grand Rapids on Van Halen’s 2004 tour. The roar of the crowd, the screaming guitars, and the unmistakable sound of Eddie’s heavy-handed but masterful riffs filled the Van Andel arena (aptly named) that night. The guitar itself bears the marks of that energy. The custom yellow and black bumblebee paint job, the bright maple fretboard, and the extremely subtle wear and tear all tell the story of a night that will never be forgotten.

2. Indianapolis, IN: Went Down to the Crossroads of America

Another piece of history from EVH—this time from Eddie's performance in Indianapolis on October 14th, 2007. This guitar stands out with its striking custom finish of red, black, & white, striped by Eddie Himself. No three colors represent the  cultural impact and chaotic virtuosity of Van Halen, making this guitar very special not only for what it represents but because for one special moment in time, this  guitar was his voice, amplified and loud, expressing the raw, untamable passion of a rock god.

3. Detroit, MI: The Motor City Mastery

October 22, 2007. Detroit, the Motor City—where music runs in the blood and rock ‘n’ roll competes with the hum of machinery. Eddie’s performance here was, unsurprisingly, a masterclass in showmanship and musicality. The Charvel EVH Art Series guitar he wielded that night has the unmistakable look of an Eddie Van Halen guitar with a dash of a true Detroit rock individuality. With a more unique black and yellow striped finish, created by the man himself, the guitar manages to display not just Eddie’s distinctive art style but also the wild, gritty energy of Detroit itself.

4. Washington, D.C.: A Political Rock ‘n’ Roll Moment

Washington, D.C., is not exactly known for being a hotbed of rock ‘n’ roll rebellion, but when Van Halen brought their tour to the nation’s capital on November 1st, 2007, something extraordinary happened, blending political gravity with rock ‘n’ roll irreverence. With a white and black finish strikingly similar to Eddie’s guitar on the cover of Van Halen’s debut album, we couldn’t think of a more perfect guitar for Eddie to play that night in the nation’s capital, displaying the classic Van Halen aesthetic that’s so ingrained in the DNA of American music.

5. Detroit, MI: The Return of the Master

On February 20th, 2012, President’s Day, the mighty Van Halen returned to Detroit almost 5 years after their wildly successful 2007 tour. They didn’t skip a beat and returned in peak form. The guitar Eddie took to Detroit was no less impressive. Detroit’s high-energy crowd must’ve been a perfect backdrop for this guitar, finished and striped by Eddie in black and white perfect for the Motor City.

6. Edmonton, AB: A Grand Finale

And then we come to Edmonton—a city that saw Eddie’s brilliance resonate long after the last note rang out from that night. This guitar, perhaps more than any other in the collection, carries it’s own distinct finish. With a combination of bright Red, Black and white that scream’s golden era Van Halen while combining a sense of modernity that only the master himself could create, this guitar should be a must have for any Van Halen fanatic.

The Legacy

To hold one of these guitars is to hold a piece of rock ‘n’ roll history. Each one is a time capsule—a relic from a moment when Eddie Van Halen redefined the very act of playing the electric guitar. Whether it was in Grand Rapids, Edmonton, Washington D.C., Detroit, or Indianapolis, these guitars were there.

When Eddie played, he didn’t just strum strings—he connected with something deeper. Something that transcended the limits of music. He showed us how to take a guitar and turn it into a voice, how to make it scream and whisper, howl and sing. And these six Charvel EVH Art Series guitars? They each carry an echo of that voice.

They are more than instruments. They are bridges between Eddie’s and everyone who was there to hear his message. If you listen closely enough, you might still hear the vibrations of the man who forever changed the sound of rock.

For the ultimate collector, we're offering all six guitars as a single, exclusive bundle. Painted and played by Eddie Van Halen during his iconic tours, this one-of-a-kind set is a rare opportunity to own a complete chapter of rock ‘n’ roll history.
