1 9 9 8—last of the air-cooled.
In the mid 90s, Porsche had made the rather controversial decision to veer away from what was likely the single most on-brand aspect of the 911…air-cooled technology. Porsche’s iconic and oversimplified air induced cooling system was to be replaced by the liquid cooled system; introduced at the tail end of ’95 in the first generation Boxster. This new wave would prove to be a bit bumpy for the famed auto-Haus, as the first liquid cooled 911—the 996—was one of the most poorly welcomed 911 generations of all time. But, as they tend to do with the 911, Porsche stuck to their guns and as 996 focus increased, production of the final air-cooled 911 (993) dwindled down. Porsche would finish the ’98 model year having produced only 4,535 911s for the world—a massive difference from the 18,463 911s produced in ’97.
Photographed here, our 1998 Porsche 911 (993) Carrera 4S has gone only 49k miles since being delivered new in Colorado in October of '98. Finished in its original specification of Black over a Black Supple leather interior, this 993 is in wonderful overall condition and comes very well-documented—accompanied by the original books, tools and spare keys. Complementing the car’s condition is its rarity. In 1998, Porsche would make only of 299 Carrera 4S cars for the U.S. market. This production figure resulted in the ’98 MY 993 Carrera 4S becoming one of the most limited Porsche production cars ever made.
