First introduced in 1953, the Rolex Explorer was designed to commemorate Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's historic ascent of Mount Everest. The watch was intended to meet the robust needs of explorers and adventurers, alike. And, rather quickly, the Explorer quickly became a staple within the Rolex collection and over the years.
Having undergone several updates throughout the decades, reference number 16570, launched in 1989, represents a significant chapter in the Explorer's history. The most notable upgrades were the 40mm case, the Caliber 3185 movement and optional white dial, nicknamed the “Polar”.
Photographed here, our 2002 Rolex Explorer II Ref. 16570 “Polar” is in excellent overall condition and shows beautiful/period correct patina. Accompanied by its original box and papers, this iconic horological tool is a wonderful blend of form and function.
