Nineteen Seventy One—1 of 830.

Introduced in 1963, Mercedes-Benz embraced mid-century elegance and simplicity with a silhouette that would become the design language for nearly all SL (Super Light) models to follow—the W113 SL, or known by it’s nickname, the “Pagoda”, for it’s slightly concave removable hard-top.

With a production period spanning just over eight years, the German auto Haus built three separate mechanical trim levels, a 230 (2.3L), 250 (2.5L) and a 280 (2.8L)—all of which featured a straight-six setup and were available with either a manual or automatic gearbox. With its torquey nature and overall small platform, the Pagoda quickly became Mercedes’ flagship sports touring car.

This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL Pagoda is one of the most well-preserved examples that we’ve seen. Finished in its original, single-stage lacquer Light Beige finish over the original Dark Brown MB-Tex vinyl interior and Dark Brown soft-top, this European specification 280 is believed to have covered only 25k miles since. This spectacular Pagoda still retains its original “fender notches” and “spot welds” and as 1 of only 830 cars produced for the 1971 model year, is amongst some of the most collectable SLs ever built.
