The Rolex Datejust has long been one of the brand’s defining models, known for its clean proportions and consistent design. This reference 16018, produced in the early 1980s, takes the familiar 36mm case into solid 18k yellow gold and pairs it with a rare dial configuration that adds character and collectability to an already notable model.
One step above the entry-level Oyster Perpetual, but still versatile enough to test new ideas with, the Datejust was the natural choice for Rolex to begin producing playful, experimental dials. The lighthearted “Palm Motif” and “Celebration” dials we see today trace their roots back to the late 70’s and early 80’s, with examples such as this, the rare “Lemon Dial."
The pale yellow Lemon Dial shows a smooth, matte surface, rather than the shining sunburst of the classic champaign dial. On top of that, it's accented by factory-set diamond hour markers all around. The result is a dial which is familiar but strikingly different, turning the traditional champaign/gold Rolex configuration on its head.
Photographed here, our 1983 example shows minor surface wear consistent with age, and wears an OEM Rolex black lizard strap and gold buckle, an increasingly rare combination that contrasts with the warmth of the yellow gold. Inside, the automatic Caliber 3035 is the first Datejust movement to offer a quickset date and a 4Hz high-beat movement, enhancing accuracy.
Completing the package, this watch comes with its original box and papers. A clean, well-preserved example of a 16018 with an exceptional dial. Perfect for avid collectors, or anyone looking for a vintage Rolex off the beaten path.
