The Ref. 5513 represents the no-frills, No-Date Sub which ages like a fine wine. It is the longest-running iteration of the Submariner, produced for nearly three decades out of the dive watch’s 73-year history. 5513s are adored by vintage Rolex fanatics for the variety in appearance that their natural aging offers. Variables like dial batches, storage conditions, and service history create the potential for two 5513s—even from the same year—to look very different from each other today.
This example from 1970 features the later matte black dial, with the less common “feet first” depth rating (“660ft = 200m”). The tritium paint on the original dial and hands has very evenly patina’d into a rich cream tone. The bezel insert is particularly well preserved, with strong color saturation and defined numerals and minute markers.
The case and bracelet present with surface wear throughout, consistent with normal use over the years. The lugs show evidence of past polishing, softening the edges slightly, though the overall case profile remains defined. The acrylic crystal is clean overall, with faint hairline swirls visible under direct light, typical of vintage acrylic.
Overall, this is a pure Golden Age Rolex Submariner. A well-kept, very original 5513 with a beautiful cream patina and strong bezel insert and matte dial.
