Developed in the mid-1950s on behalf of Pan Am, the GMT-Master was designed for pilots crossing time zones at the dawn of the Jet Age. Its rotating bezel and the red 24-hour hand allow the wearer to track two time zones simultaneously. By the early 90’s, the model had gradually evolved into a bulletproof tool watch which can stand up to the test of daily use to this day.
The reference 16700, introduced in 1988, is the last generation of the original GMT-Master lineage before the line split into the GMT-Master II. Many collectors prefer the 16700 because, while it’s outfitted with all the same upgrades as the GMT-Master II (quickset date, sapphire crystal, white gold hour markers), it retains the simplicity and ease of use of the traditional GMT complication, which is operated strictly by rotating the outer bezel.
This particular 1991 example is accompanied by its original Box & Papers. The vibrant red-and-blue “Pepsi” aluminum bezel insert retains strong color saturation. The case and Oyster bracelet show light surface wear, and the original green case-back sticker is still present. Overall, this Pepsi is showing mild, honest patina throughout and is a great addition to any collection or a wonderful one-watch solution for everyday use.
