Offered in unique platforms, a Hardtop Coupe, 2+2 Fastback and Convertible, Ford launched the Mustang at the New York World's Fair in April 1964 and sold a million of them inside two years. Nothing had moved like it before. The long hood and short deck became the shape every car that followed in the class was measured against.
1966 was the model's best year, with 607,568 cars built and 72,119 of them convertibles. The engine to have is the A-code, a 289 four-barrel rated at 225 horsepower and the strongest Ford offered that year, short of the K-code HiPo. In GT trim, with fog lamps set into the grille bar and rocker stripes down the sills, it is the version most people see when they close their eyes and think “Mustang”.
Photographed here, our 1966 GT Convertible is finished in its correct color of Ivy Green Metallic over Black vinyl interior, and was built at the Eddison Assembly in New Jersey on December 2, 1965. It was then routed to Boston, where Middlesex Motor Co. of Concord, Massachusetts delivered it that November to Jean P. Carithien. His original owner card is still with the car, and the warranty number is stamped into the inner fender apron as well as the door tag. It spent the next forty years in Vermont, where it was rebuilt structurally in 1991 and then restored again by its long-term owner between 2015 and 2018 — a job he logged by hand across seventy entries and more than 218 hours. This car is a true, well documented GT, that shows extremely well and is in great overall condition.
