Piaget spent much of the late 70s and 80s making understated dress watches with an emphasis on thin cases and careful machining of precious metals, rather than complicated layouts or mechanics. And, this Ref. 5894, highlights that approach to a tee. With a dial fashioned out of obsidian stone—a material which is notoriously difficult to machine due to its brittle, glass-like nature—is not the usual opaque black that you’d expect. Being partially transparent, it allows you to see some of the inner workings of the in-house quartz movement beneath.
The standout dial is housed in a 31mm 18k white gold case, with the Piaget “tapestry” pattern adding texture around the bezel. Diamond hour markers are factory-set at 3, 6, 9, and 12, and the time is displayed with mirror-polished dauphine hands. It is in honest overall condition with surface wear visible throughout the case. It’s fitted to a Piaget leather strap with its original 18k white gold Piaget buckle.
