The 944 is the car that settled the argument about whether a front-engined Porsche could be a real Porsche. Where the 924 borrowed its four-cylinder from Audi, the 944 carried an engine of its own design— effectively, one bank of the 928’s V8, cast in aluminum with twin counter-rotating balance shafts. The chassis was widened and flared over the 924’s to take the extra width, the gearbox sat at the rear in a transaxle, and the weight landed almost evenly between the axles. The result handled better than anything else Porsche sold at the time, and for most of the decade the 944 outsold the 911.
By 1986 the car had received the revision that owners now look for. The mid-1985 update replaced the antiquated 924-derived cabin with the oval dashboard, better seats and a new wheel, and brought larger brakes, a bigger fuel tank and central locking. The 2.5-litre M44/07 was rated at 147 horsepower in US form, driving through a five-speed transmission.
Photographed here, our 1986 Porsche 944 is an absolute time capsule. Built on the 30th of August 1985 at the Neckarsulm plant, and finished in one of the rarest colors of the era, Sapphire Metallic over a Linen interior with the “Porsche” fabric seat inserts, this particular example has gonly only 19k since new. Unlike many ultra low mileage cars, this 944 has been very well servivced and maintained throughout its life and is truly a turn-key trip back to the 80s.
