The 964 is the point at which the 911 stopped being a car Porsche kept patching and became a car Porsche actually re-engineered. Announced for 1989, it was roughly 85 percent new against the 3.2 Carrera it replaced. Featuring coil springs in place of the torsion bars, power steering, ABS, a speed-sensitive rear spoiler and the 3.6-litre flat-six making 247 horsepower in US trim, the 964 kept the shape and classic air-cooled DNA but delivered and entirely new 911 experience.
The Targa was the smallest part of the 964’s production run. And, it was the final air-cooled 911 to feature the true Targa design. The 993 that followed in 1995 abandoned it entirely for a sliding glass roof, so the 964 is where the original Targa idea ends. Far fewer were built than coupés or cabriolets in any year of the 964, and 1993 is the thinnest year of all — only 137 cars were built for the US market.
Photographed here, our 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa is ultimately, the holy grail. It’s a black-black, rear wheel drive air-cooled 911 Targa with only 62k original miles. This particular example has been very well maintained and features unique factory options such as the Porsche branded car-phone as well as the wood trimmed shift knob and e-brake lever. Accompanied by its original books and tools, this car is one of the best representations of an era, model and trim that we will simply never get back.
