Few vehicles have earned the cult status of the Land Rover Defender. Born from postwar necessity in 1948, the Defender spent nearly seven decades in continuous production before Land Rover ended the run in 2016. In the United States, the truck was officially offered under the North American Specification (NAS) from 1994 to 1997 only. And, when that window closed, clean original examples became scarce and began appreciating rapidly.
The short wheel base variant (D90), paired with the legendary 2.5-liter inline-four turbo diesel sits at a real sweet spot in the Defender lineup, and is widely regarded as one of the finest powertrains offered. It’s torquey, rebuildable and built to run indefinitely. While NAS trucks were fitted with a heavier V8 and an automatic gearbox to meet U.S. requirements, Euro-market 300Tdi examples represent the purist’s configuration, and are among the most sought after in today’s marketplace.
Our 1995 Defender 90 was imported from Italy, having never seen snow or a salted road. Meaning, there is little to no rust present on this truck. Having gone less than 100k miles, it is well within the “low mileage” category in the Rover world. During a recent refresh, an “OEM Plus” style approach was taken, which included the installation of a full Bilstein suspension, 16-inch Boost alloys on BF Goodrich Mud Terrain tires, Mantec spare tire carrier, and MUD accessories from the UK. Overall, this D90 has been tastefully upgraded without losing its factory character and it is a wonderful representation of a Land Rover Defender in peak form.
