The Tank Basculante takes Cartier’s most iconic shape and adds an element of mechanical intrigue. Its vertically rotating case was originally designed to protect the dial during sport, a necessity that modern materials have rendered obsolete—but the mechanism remains both engaging and uniquely Cartier.
This example dates to 2000 and comes from Cartier’s Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP), a period widely regarded as the brand’s modern high point. CPCP watches were produced in limited numbers, built in precious metals, and fitted with mechanical movements at a time when much of Cartier’s lineup leaned toward quartz.
The 25mm solid 18k yellow gold case houses a beautifully finished guilloché dial, adding depth and texture without overwhelming the classic Tank layout. The crystal is clear, and the case shows surface wear consistent with age, along with a few deeper marks on the engraved caseback. There is no indication of polishing.
With its refined CPCP execution and tactile flipping case, this Basculante adds a layer of mechanical charm to the timeless Tank design.
