In late 2015 Lewis Hamilton had just clinched his third Formula One championship, and MV Agusta handed him a drawing table at their Castiglioni Research Centre in Varese, Italy. He spent months there with the factory's designers working through paint, finishes and machined parts, and the motorcycle that came out of it was shown at EICMA in Milan that November—the Brutale Dragster 800 RR LH44, built in a run of 244 for the world.
Short of a full-spec race bike, the Dragster RR was the sharpest thing in the MV lineup. Its 798cc three-cylinder makes 140 horsepower — about what your average family sedan makes — in a motorcycle that weighs 370 pounds dry. It shifts up and down without touching the clutch, and four ride modes and eight levels of traction control sit behind the throttle to keep all of that manageable. Brembo brakes, an inverted Marzocchi fork, and a 200-section rear tire on a six-inch spoked rim, which is the detail that makes a Dragster look like nothing else at a red light.
Hamilton's version carries better than fifty changes to that specification. Pearl white over metallic black with red, the steel trellis frame and both wheel rims anodized to match, his number 44 on the flanks, and the mark from his helmet on the tank and embroidered into the tail. Front fender, flyscreen, tank side panels and radiator ducts are matte carbon fiber. The levers, the Quick Action fuel cap, the engine covers and the frame guards are machined Ergal aluminum, all of it anodized red. The seat is quilted Alcantara with red contrast stitching. His signature is printed across the nose, and a numbered plaque is set into the carbon flyscreen directly ahead of the bars.
Photographed here is number 038 of 244, having gone only 565 miles from new. The carbon, the paint and the red machined hardware all read the way they left Varese. The bike is accompanied by all of its original equipment, including the individually numbered certificate of authenticity and an alcantara brochure with an LCD screen playing the official release video.
