In the world of vintage Rolex, the Submariner 16800 is something of a bridge, not just between generations, but between eras. Introduced in the late 1970s and produced through the mid-1980s, it was the first Submariner to feature a sapphire crystal and quickset date, while still retaining the matte dials and tritium lume that defined earlier references. It’s where the modern Sub begins, without losing the rugged charm of its tool-watch roots.
Photographed here, our c.1986 Rolex Submariner Ref. 16800 wears all the character you hope for in a transitional-era vintage piece. Under certain lighting, its matte black dial shows a uniform spread of tiny dots – an early indication of a subtle and attractive “freckled dial” patina which is valued by collectors for its portrayal of originality and organic aging. Additionally, the lume within the hour hands and white gold encased minute markers has aged to a warm cream tone. Its case appears to be unpolished, showing its original shape with honest surface wear throughout. The same can be said about its 93150 Oyster bracelet. Last but certainly not least, it’s powered by the marques Caliber 3035 movement—quickset-equipped, hackable, and built to last!
This example is also accompanied by its complete original box and papers—rounding out a package that’s as compelling for either a veteran collector or a first timer!
