Circa 1950's Movado Day-Date Bumper Automatic Ref. 18159

Vintage Movado tends to surprise people who only associate the brand with its current minimalist “fashion watch” identity. But before the brand was transformed by the 70s Quartz Crisis, Movado was turning out mechanically-driven watches that stood shoulder to shoulder with many of its Swiss peers.

This stainless steel Ref. 18159 is an elegant daily driver with a day and date complication and automatic movement. It self-winds using a “bumper” that rocks back and forth, rather than a full rotor that spins 360 degrees. The day wheel on this example is in Spanish (DOM, LUN, MAR and so on), a small detail that adds character and a personal touch for Spanish speakers. Paired with a brown leather strap, it wears as a refined, classic piece.

Condition-wise, this Movado presents very nicely for its age. The case shows some regular surface wear, while the crystal is very clean overall, with only a few extremely subtle marks.
