The Heuer Carrera was introduced in 1963 as a purpose-built chronograph for motorsport, designed by Jack Heuer with one clear goal—maximum legibility at speed.
Reference 2447N, distinguished by its matte black dial and white printing, making that goal achievable, plus some. The no-nonsense dial layout features highly-reflective baton markers, sunken subdials, and a slightly angled outer ring that neatly frames everything.
This particular example has a spotless crystal, and its 36mm stainless steel case remains in good, honest condition. It does show surface wear throughout, consistent with light use over many decades, but importantly, there is no indication of over-polishing—the lugs remain sharp and defined and the dial is one of the best we’ve ever seen.
Inside, is the legendary Valjoux 72; A manually wound movement that powered many of the most important chronographs of the era, such as the “Paul Newman” Rolex Daytona. To say that this movement is wildly respected would be an understatement. It’s robust and serviceable for life, which plays a large role in why the original Carrera remains so usable today.
